How to read a word rebus
Every puzzle above uses one of six moves. Name the move and the phrase usually falls out:
- PositionOver, under, in, after, beside or between — where a word sits is part of the phrase (#1–#4, #6, #7, #10, #11, #21–#23).
- CountingHow many times a word appears matters — three of something, four of something (#5, #15, #16, #25, #28).
- Gaps and splitsA space inside a word is a clue in itself (#8, #9, #13).
- DirectionLetters that run backward or downward (#14, #19).
- SizeLetters that grow, shrink or stand out (#20).
- Sound-alikesNumbers and letters that sound like words — 4 for “for”, U for “you”, C for “see” (#17, #24, #27, #34).
Picture rebuses add three more tricks on top of these. Our guide to solving rebus puzzles walks through all nine with worked examples, and what is a rebus? covers the history.
Word rebus FAQ
What is a word rebus?
A word rebus (also called a text rebus) spells out a word or phrase using only letters and how they are arranged — their position, size, direction, spacing and how many times they repeat. For example, MIND written over MATTER reads “mind over matter”.
What is the difference between a word rebus and a picture rebus?
A picture rebus uses drawings and objects as clues (an eye, a heart and a U for “I love you”), while a word rebus uses letters alone. Both are read the same way: say what you see, then look at position, size, direction and repetition.
Are word rebuses for kids or adults?
Both. The easy ones work for children and ESL learners, while the hard ones — built on puns, letter sounds and hidden words — are real brain teasers for adults.
